PuppetLAB is a program housed within PuppetART Theater that occurs from June through October with the goal of establishing a laboratory for artistic teams collaborating within the medium of puppetry to develop new puppet performances. Call for PuppetLAB proposals was issued in early May, proposals were evaluated and the teams chosen in early June, and the first LAB session occurred Sunday June 15th. The program will give the participating artists, which come from a variety of disciplines, the time and space to test ideas, learn from others and receive and respond to critical feedback, establishing a formalized process of professional development as each team develops its idea from beginning concept into final performance. The mini-festival of all performances will be open to the public and occur on October 17th and 18th. Over the duration of the laboratory, participating artists will work through four main phases of the production process (text analysis, design concept, production/fabrication and integration) as they explore the boundaries of what we collectively consider to be "puppet theater". Participants include Colette Czarnecki, Andy Mitchell and Naia Venturi from The Dreamland Theater, Carrie Morris, David Rosman and Bailey Scieskza.
Please check back in on our blog as all participants will be posting short write ups about their work, their project and their experience in the lab as we get closer to the festival in October!
